71ST NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS IN VIENNA

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna organized an official event for the Sri Lankan community on 04 February 2019 to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of National Independence Day in dignified manner at the premises of Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna, Austria.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Mrs. W. Irosha Prabhani Cooray, Chargée d' Affaires a.i. followed by the playing of the National Anthem. A group of children living in Vienna sang the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil language and performed a welcome dance.

Mrs. W. Irosha Prabhani Cooray, Chargée d' Affaires a.i. and members of the Sri Lankan community working at the UN International agencies including the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations International Development Organization, the Comprehensive Test-Ban-Treaty Organization and the two officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who were on training Programme in Vienna lit the traditional oil lamp.

The multi-faith religious observances were conducted by Ven. Dr. Wijayarajapura Seelawansa Nayake Thero and Ven. Gyosei Masunaga, Rev. Geetha Nayak, Father Anthonyaiah Everest Dias and Imam Tarafa Baghajati.

National Day messages of H.E. Maithripala Sirisena, President, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister and Hon. Tilak Marapana, Minister of Foreign Affairs were read by the several teenagers from the community living in Vienna.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Mrs. W. Irosha Prabhani Cooray, Chargée d' Affaires a.i. recalled the efforts of Sri Lanka’s national heroes to gain independence and the highlighted importance of unity and harmony among all ethnicities to achieve political, social and economic goals of Sri Lanka.

The gathering was entertained by 05 dancing performances and 03 “Deshabimana Gee” which were all performed by children, teenagers and adults living in Vienna.

Sri Lankan dinner was served for around 175 members of the Sri Lankan community in Vienna who attended the event.


 

SRI LANKA PARTICIPATES AT FERIEN – MESSE WIEN 2019 INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR FOR HOLIDAY, TRAVEL AND LEISURE IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Sri Lanka participated at the Ferien-Messe Wien International trade fair for holiday, travel and leisure held from 10 - 13 January 2019 in Vienna, Austria. Sri Lanka’s participation at this event was coordinated by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna, Austria.

The Ferien-Messe Wien, the leading trade fair for tourism in Central Europe is held every year at the beginning of the holiday season for holiday, travel and variety seekers, and attracted approximately 800 national and international exhibitors and more than 155,000 visitors this year.

Six companies from the hospitality, travel and wellness industry participated under the Sri Lanka Pavilion, namely, Siddhalepa Ayurvedha Health Resort, Sri Lanka Jagath Tours and Travels, Baberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort (Pvt) Ltd, Ceylon Roots,Butterfly Vacation, Lets Travels.

The Sri Lanka Pavilion was inaugurated by the Chargée d’Affaires of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna, Austria on 10 January 2019 with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp in the presence of invitees. Traditional Sri Lanka refreshments were also served.

Promotion of Ceylon tea by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna, Austria was conducted during the four days of the Ferien-Messe Wien.

A Presentation on Sri Lanka as a tourist destination titled “Sri Lanka Perle des Indischen Ozeans” (Sri Lanka pearl of the Indian Ocean) was also made at the Travel Cinema at the Fair.


 

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS AND CAROLS ORGANIZED BY THE EMBASSY AND PERMANENT MISSION OF SRI LANKA IN VIENNA

 An event of Christmas celebrations and Carols was organized for the first time by the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna on Saturday, 29 December 2018 at the premises of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to restore the friendly links with all Sri Lankan ethnicities in Austria.

This remarkable event organized by the Chargée d' Affaires a.i. and the staff of the Mission was participated by many Sri Lankans and six Priests based in Vienna. During the event, Sinhala, Tamil, English and German carols were sung by the Sri Lankan Choir. The President's message was read by Sri Lankan children living in Vienna. The colourful event provided an opportunity especially for children in Vienna to show their talents.


 

SRI LANKA PARTICIPATES IN THE UNITED NATIONS WOMEN’S GUILD BAZAAR 2018 IN VIENNA

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna with the support of the Sri Lankan expatriate Community, participated in the United Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG) Charity Bazaar at the Vienna Conference Center on 16 December 2018. About 150 nations took part in the event with their stalls and more than 50,000 people visited the Bazaar. Each year from the proceeds of the bazaar, the UNWG financially supports many children’s charities in Austria and in the developing world.

At the Sri Lanka stall, delicious Sri Lankan rice and curry, sweets, savories and spices were sold. Sri Lanka Tea and Herbal Tea were also served. The proceeds of the sale were donated to the charity programmes aimed at helping children in need.

For the first time, a group of Sri Lankan performers in national costume showcased Sri Lankan cultural identity, joining the participants from Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago and Ukraine.



Sri Lankan Kandyan and Tamil traditional dance troupes in authentic dresses also participated in the International Cultural Performance at the Bazaar and attracted a large number of spectators.

"Katina Cheewara Poojawa" - Offering Katina Robe

For Buddhists, the "Katina Cheewara Poojawa" is an eagerly awaited occasion as it can only be held once a year. The three-month period when monks are committed to the observance of religious practices maintaining a close relationship with the laity, preaching to them and getting them to observe meditative practices.

Customarily, the ‘Katina’ robe is sewn and offered in the month of November every year. This year also. "The Katina Cheewara Poojawa" was held in Vienna, Austria on the 18th Sunday, November 2018 at the Nyanaponika Dhamma Centre" in Vienna, Austria with the Sri Lankan and Austrian Community. Mrs Irosha Cooay, Charge' d' Affaires a.i. and the staff of the Embassy participated at the "Pirith Chanting Ceremony" which was held on the 17th Saturday, November 2018 at the Nyanaponika Dhamma Centre"

The staff of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Austria offered "Heel Dane" to the fourteen Sri Lankan Buddhist monks who came to Vienna from various countries, at the Embassy premises on the 18th November 2018.
