Ambassador-designate of Sri Lanka to Austria and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN Office and other international organisations in Vienna assumes duties

Ambassador – designate to Austria and the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UNO and other international organizations in Vienna M.R.K Lenagala assumed duties at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vienna on 2 October 2023. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vienna is concurrently accredited to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Ambassador – designate Lenagala was Additional Secretary (Multilateral Affairs) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo prior to this appointment.

His assumption of duties was marked by a simple ceremony organised by the staff of the Embassy.

A career diplomat with over 25 years of experience he joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service as a member of its 1998 intake, having placed first in the order of merit at the recruitment examination. In his diplomatic assignments he has served at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York and as the Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka both in London and in New Delhi. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo he has served in several capacities at the Political Affairs West and the UN & Human Rights Divisions, the latter of which he has headed twice as the Director General. He has also served as Personal Assistant to four consecutive Ministers of Foreign Affairs. A past student of Ananda College Colombo he holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of International Relations degree from the University of Colombo. He is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

On 5 October 2023 Ambassador-designate Lenagala presented a copy of his Letters of Credence to Ambassador Maximilian Hennig, Chief of Protocol of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria.
