Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka presents Credentials to Director General of UNIDO

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Austria and the United Nations in Vienna, Mrs. Priyanee Wijesekera presented Credentials to Mr. Li Yong, Director General of the United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO) at the Office of the Director General in the Vienna International Centre, on Tuesday 22 March 2016.

During the discussion that followed, the Director General briefed Ambassador Wijesekera on the work and priorities of UNIDO and the organization’s strong partnerships built with the international community, financial institutions and the private sector.

Referring to UNIDO’s partnership with Sri Lanka and the strong programmes conducted for many years in the country, the Director General stressed that great importance was attached to the relationship with Sri Lanka and he wished to see the steady implementation of these programmes. The Director General also noted his visit to Sri Lanka in January 2015 and his meeting with HE President Maithripala Sirisena. He extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Wijesekera and looked forward to working together.

Ambassador Wijesekera expressed appreciation for the significant cooperation and assistance provided to the industrial sector in Sri Lanka in broadening the industrial base, strengthening national capacity and the competitiveness of local industries. She also noted Sri Lanka’s interest in continuing to work in close partnership with UNIDO in the future.

Ambassador Wijesekera has previously held the position of Secretary General of Parliament from August, 2002 to March 2008. She was also the Chairperson of the ‘Committee on Violence Against Women’ and has been the recipient of prestigious awards such as the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus under the category of “Prominent women in Sri Lanka” – 2014 as well as the ‘Zonta Woman of the Year’ award for law in 2006. Her publications include “Parliaments and Governments in the Next Millennium – 1999” and “Parliamentary Practice in Sri Lanka – 2nd Edition – 2007”. She holds an LLB (Ceylon), LLM (Colombo) in Public International Law and Attorney-at-law. She is a past student of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
