Ambassador-designate of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Austria assumes duties

The Ambassador-designate of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Austria, Mr. Majintha Jayesinghe assumed duties at the Mission on 8 May 2020.

The assumption of duties was marked by lighting the oil lamp in keeping with the Sri Lankan tradition.

Ambassador-designate called on the Most Venerable Dr. Wijayarajapura Seelawansa Thero, founder and the Chief Priest of the Dhamma Center Nyanaponika in Austria. Religious observance and chanting of pirith was conducted by Venerable Dr. Seelawansa Thero to invoke blessings on the newly appointed Ambassador.

Ambassador-designate was accompanied by Mr. Charitha Weerasinghe, Head of Chancery and Mr. Mahesh Mahakumarage, Second Secretary of the Mission.

Addressing the Staff, Ambassador Jayesinghe recalled the close relations between the two countries and emphasized the need to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s presence by promoting trade, investment, tourism, and cultural ties.

Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1998 and was Ambassador in the United Arab Emirates prior to the appointment in the Republic of Austria. The diplomatic career entailed serving as Deputy High Commissioner in Malaysia, Consul General in Shanghai, PRC, and also in the Sri Lanka Embassy in the People’s Republic of China. Ambassador-designate also held positions at the Foreign Ministry including Chief of Protocol, Director General, CHOGM Taskforce 2013 Secretariat, Director General, Human Rights and Acting Additional Secretary Protocol, Human Rights, and West.

Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe is a graduate of the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and a past pupil of St. Joseph’s College and Royal College, Colombo.
