“Embassy Cup” cricket tournament held in Vienna for 2nd consecutive year

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka together with Missions in Austria organized the “Embassy Cup” cricket tournament for the 2nd consecutive year in Vienna with the joint support of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and MTC Exotic Supermarket. The tournament  was held on Sunday, 4 September 2022 at the De la Salle Sportzentrum in Vienna.

Representatives from the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport together with Heads of Mission and also think tank, entrepreneurs, travel agents, bloggers, tourism magazines, writers from print and electronic attended the event.

Ten countries namely, Australia, Bangladesh, India, Ireland, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom fielded their teams for the tournament.

The Embassy of Bangladesh and the Embassy of Pakistan qualified for the final match of the tournament. The Embassy of Bangladesh won the “Embassy Cup” while the Embassy of Pakistan emerged as runner-up. His Excellency Aftab Ahmad Khokher, Ambassador of Pakistan and Mr. Rahat Bin Zaman, Deputy Chief of Mission of Bangladesh led the teams of Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively.

The tournament also featured friendly cricket matches for ambassadors and ladies which enthralled the guests.

The playground was elegantly decorated with banners, flags and backdrops while the “SO SRI LANKA” branding was displayed with the support of SLTPB. World finest “Ceylon Tea” was also served at the venue with the support of Sri Lanka Tea Board. Music of all participating countries including Sri Lanka was played while all countries showcased their traditional cuisine and beverages creating a truly festive ambience.

Sri Lanka was able to showcase and brand itself as a leading tourist destination among the gathering.

The Embassy Cup cricket tournament attracted wide media coverage in Austria.
